A disgraced former prince with ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is now demanding British taxpayers pay for his personal security — and the public is furious.
Story Snapshot
- Prince Andrew was confronted by a masked attacker and is now pushing to have taxpayer-funded security restored.
- His government-funded protection was cut years ago after he stepped back from royal duties due to his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
- King Charles also stopped privately funding Andrew’s security in 2024, leaving him fully exposed.
- New allegations suggest Andrew may have used taxpayer-funded police and aircraft to visit Epstein — adding fuel to public anger over his demands.
A Masked Attacker Reignites a Costly Debate
Prince Andrew — now known formally as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor after losing his royal titles — was recently confronted by a person wearing a balaclava near his home at Royal Lodge in Windsor. The incident has led Andrew to push for taxpayer-funded police protection to be restored. Commentator Rafe Heydel-Mankoo told reporters that Andrew believes he is entitled to that protection after the threatening encounter. [17] Most British taxpayers disagree.
Andrew lost his publicly funded security in 2022, after he stepped back from royal duties. Queen Elizabeth had kept the protection in place even after his 2019 exit from public life. When she died, King Charles took over the cost privately. But in August 2024, Charles cut off that private funding too, reportedly as part of a broader dispute with Andrew over his continued stay at Royal Lodge. [3] That left Andrew without any security arrangement — and apparently looking for someone else to foot the bill.
The Epstein Shadow Makes the Demand Harder to Defend
Andrew’s demand for public money lands at the worst possible time. New reporting from CNN in early 2026 revealed fresh allegations that Andrew may have used taxpayer-funded police officers and Royal Air Force aircraft to travel to meetings with Epstein. [10] Emails released by the U.S. Department of Justice suggest that London Metropolitan Police officers — paid by British taxpayers — were directed to provide security at a dinner held at Epstein’s New York home in December 2010.
Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown called for a police inquiry into whether Andrew misused government aircraft and military air bases for those visits. [10] The Metropolitan Police said it had not found wrongdoing by the protection officers so far, but was still reviewing the evidence. Andrew has not responded publicly to these latest allegations. That silence, combined with his demand for new taxpayer protection, has struck many observers as tone-deaf at best.
The Rules Are Clear — But Rarely Enforced Cleanly
The body that decides who gets publicly funded police protection in Britain is called the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, or RAVEC. It operates with very little public transparency. There is no official list of who qualifies or what the exact criteria are. [24] That opacity has allowed disputes like Andrew’s — and Prince Harry’s years-long legal battle over his own security — to drag on without clear resolution. Courts ultimately ruled against Harry, saying he was no longer a working royal and therefore not entitled to automatic police protection. [19]

Andrew’s situation follows the same basic logic. He is not a working royal. He holds no official duties. He paid a financial settlement to sex abuse accuser Virginia Giuffre. He lost his “His Royal Highness” title. [9] The estimated annual cost of restoring full police protection for him runs between $500,000 and $4 million. [12] Whether a genuine security threat could change RAVEC’s calculation remains unclear. What is clear is that the British public — already stretched thin by years of economic pressure — has little appetite for picking up that tab for someone who has brought so much scandal to the crown.
